It’s that very awkward subject that even the most well meaning mother of the bride wants to avoid asking….but really; what are you going to do if it rains? Well firstly you need to remember, that it’s absolutely out of your control if it does rain. So you have two choices. You can embrace the weather, or you can let it ruin your day.
When you are in the heat of the moment and confronted with the weather, sometimes it takes a little nudging in the right direction to get you in the wet weather spirit. So here are a few little chestnuts that might help you on the way.
Plan in advance.
Ah yes the most obvious one. But don’t leave it until the week before the wedding to write your wet weather plan down. If you have booked us for planning or coordination, we will be asking for your wet weather plan in advance so we know who to get in touch with on the day should things not go to plan. Tell vendors and guests about your wet weather plan.
There is nothing worse as a guest not knowing whether the ceremony is still an outdoor event on the day of the wedding if it is raining. Give them plenty of notice (calling them an hour before the ceremony starts is a bad idea). To make your life easier, and save you a whole heap of phone calls, print out a separate insert card with your wedding invitations. Include a URL where guests can see if there are any changes to the ceremony (if you are a Girl Friday client, we will do this for you and publish for you on the day). For those guests without internet, have a phone number with a voice message in place.
Roll with it.
Well if it’s going to rain on your day, you may as well make the most of it. Grab yourself a pair of wedding wellies or raincoat even (we love Hunter – who couldn’t?) or grab some bright umbrellas to party up your photos.

Often I hear from our clients that they are having the ceremony outside rain, hail or shine. Try not to fall into this trap. It’s unrealistic to think that in the pouring rain you are going to want to get married outside, let alone host your guests there. We do take consultations by the hour to find the perfect wet weather venue for you, contact us to find out more. Many musicians and celebrants will often be unable to work outside because of their equipment. Have an indoor venue that you can fall back on. Not only does this take the pressure off you, but the peace of mind that it will bring is just priceless.
Rain on your wedding day isn’t the end of the world. Having realistic expectations for your ceremony and being prepared with things not going exactly to plan, is the best way to avoid disappointment.
